As
a webmaster, I have the luxury of seeing the statistics from many
Chicago style steppers sites. The effect on the steppers community is
hidden in these reports but it is big... The numbers can be overwhelming
unless you have an understanding of what is presented in the reports,
and believe me when I say there are lots of reports of every type, and
each report tells a different story. The key is always in how they are
interpreted. The basic goal of these reports are to give the
webmaster/web site owner a look at who is coming to the site (Stuff like
city and state and what site they came from, not personal information),
where they go once they are on your site, how long they stay, and even
if they are new visitors. The information is always very specific to
each site and must be looked at as one would look at an individual
person. One "trend" I have noticed over the years of looking over the
analytics is the percentage of visitors who visit the sites from what
are called "Referring Sites" in these reports. It's a fairly broad
category, but the goal is to help discover where visitors come from.
Google is always a big contributor to the incoming traffic on the sites
I author and I am sure it's true about other sites as well. Highly
specialized sites like the
History of Stepping Project,
rely heavily on the search engines for their traffic because people
outside of the stepping community want to learn more about stepping and
it's history before delving into other aspects of the dance. 50% of the
incoming traffic on the
History of Stepping Project
website comes from search engines, and another 20% comes from
SteppersUSA.Com. The rest of the traffic comes from other steppers
websites that choose to provide links to the site.
One trend that is encouraging to me, is that SteppersUSA has become sort
of a "Steppers Google". In most of the sites I read reports from, this
site generates more traffic for the other sites than Google does.
SteppersUSA has become a true hub of Chicago style stepping on the web.

This is an open message to ALL steppers. Please share it with as many people as possible.
As many of you may already know I started a new web
site for the benefit of the greater steppers community. It's called
The History of Stepping Project. I wish to encourage you to add your
knowledge to the timeline. If you know anything about stepping, please
share this with the public on this site. We are looking for all
information related to stepping from it's beginnings to the present. The
information literally includes everything from clubs and bars which held
steppers sets and parties to contests and the participants and results,
to when different steppers organizations and classes started, who the
instructors were and are; Musical bands, and artists, DJ's, radio and
television personalities, Movies, videos, and photos… literally
everything stepping.
Creating an accurate historic timeline will go a long
way toward helping the community take the next step in its logical
progression as it continues to grow nationwide and will become a
valuable resource for all in the future.
Your input, your knowledge and your effort have made the dance what it
is today. Don't you feel your place (and your organization's) in the
timeline is well deserved? I do!
