None of this will come to those of you who have been around this dance for a long time as any kind of a news flash, but isn't it really easy to tell the difference between someone who is dancing (really stepping) and someone who is counting? I have watched the dance grow over the years, seen countless contest's, people stepping at clubs, in sets, and parties. I've watched hour after hour of videos, (both those I have produced and those I' haven't). I remember in the mid nineties when the experienced steppers mantra was, "When they count, they look mechanical, and that's not the dance."  Here we are heading into the last part of the first decade of the twenty first century and has anything really changed? Some of the faces who were in the background in 1996 have brought their game to the table, but when they are pressed about the count they use, they (as instructors say they always use a count) don't use a count when they are performing in a contest. Just like back in the seventies, many of the people we call the best dancers in stepping, didn't learn in a class. Their mother taught them in the kitchen, or uncle Joe showed them some footwork. More and more people say they got their first taste of stepping from watching the World's Largest, or videos from other contest's and even You Tube. It comes down to how well you feel the beat of the music and how you feel it in your heart and can translate it into compelling moves which the crowd and judges alike stand up and say WOW! I feel the key thing for anyone who steps is to remember the count is a tool to get you programmed to feel the beat. No matter how much classic and technical training you get, if you don't "feel it" you may become a good dancer, but a dancer who is self-limited and can't dance like no one is watching. Take the next step, bring it to the next level, not only will you impress those you dance with, but you'll impress yourself.
