A contest that actually came oh so close to starting exactly on time! That's something you just don't see anymore... wait not anymore! Ever! Not only did the contest get started close to when it was supposed to, It was entertaining, all of the contestants brought game (you'll see when I post that video), and it finished at a decent time. Qualifiers were Westside Mike and Alexis, Eric Gordon and Tina Melendrez, Swan and Sunshine, Georgie Porgie and Tanya Nash, Ernie (Baby) and Timeka. September 20th is when the Willow Brook Ballroom is going to shake! After I packed up my cameras and video equipment, I ran into Bruce Dyer (Steppers Alliance) and we continued a conversation we have been having over a period of time about Instructor certification. Pete Frazier was also in this parking lot discussion and we all seemed to come to a consensus about certification and I want to share my take on how the conversation went. We all agreed there is a screaming need for certification. We also agreed the only part of the dance that needs certification is the basics. We agreed that everything beyond the basics is improvisational and could never be something that could be certified (IE, too much control over the fun part of the dance). The problem is simple yet complicated... Who's method do you use for certification? (Please keep in mind,  there is an organization dedicated to certification in place, and from my conversation last night with Tanya Nash, who runs the NSAAB, she understands the problem). Perhaps the king of the eight count, LC Henderson's widely accepted method could be used as the benchmark for eight count certification. I have to tell you we were sort of stuck when attempting to name a person to benchmark the six count on though. Once again, I would like to call upon you the readers of this column to make suggestions as no single name came to minds quickly as LC's did when discussing the eight count. If you have some ideas, send them to webmaster@steppersusa.com and I'll share them with everyone. Remember the person should be a long standing stepper with a history of respect in the community.

This is an open message to ALL steppers. Please share it with as many people as possible.

 As many of you may already know I started a new web site for the benefit of the greater steppers community. It's called The History of Stepping Project. I wish to encourage you to add your knowledge to the timeline. If you know anything about stepping, please share this with the public on this site. We are looking for all information related to stepping from it's beginnings to the present. The information literally includes everything from clubs and bars which held steppers sets and parties to contests and the participants and results, to when different steppers organizations and classes started, who the instructors were and are; Musical bands, and artists, DJ's, radio and television personalities, Movies, videos, and photos… literally everything stepping.
Creating an accurate historic timeline will go a long way toward helping the community take the next step in its logical progression as it continues to grow nationwide and will become a valuable resource for all in the future.
Your input, your knowledge and your effort have made the dance what it is today. Don't you feel your place (and your organization's) in the timeline is well deserved? I do!

The effort requires more than just posting the information. The need for fact checkers, people willing to do some research exists in this important ongoing project. Just a few minutes a week can make a difference.
